Nelson Mandela Day, normally takes place on Mandela’s birthday July 18, is a global call to action for people to have a positive effect on others around them. To pay tribute to this day, SCI Mandela Day of Giving seeks to capture the spirit of Nelson Mandela Day as we convene in Cape Town for the SCI Africa Summit. The Summit will deploy teams of volunteers to interact with clients and staff of four local nonprofit agencies serving families and children and five primary schools in the Langa Township of Cape Town. This immersive experience will provide volunteer participants an opportunity to learn, teach, explore, engage, and network with the “Heart and Soul” of Cape Town.

Libraries & Literacy Initiative
Launched in 2021 with the celebration of the first children’s book about the first president of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah, the Libraries & Literacy Initiative aims to increase literacy for both American and African children. Partnering with Just Us Books, books about Africans and African Americans are shared throughout the US and the African continent to gain a better appreciation of the richness of both cultures. During the summit in Cape Town, five elementary schools in Langa Quarter will be given books to start their first school libraries.

Sports Diplomacy in the SCI Africa Region: NBA Africa & ACI Initiative
Football/soccer has traditionally been the leading sport in Africa, but other sports such as basketball are beginning to take hold throughout the continent.
