Tuscaloosa Sister Cities: German Exchange Program

From October 9–24, 2025, Tuscaloosa Sister Cities International (TSCI) proudly hosted students and teachers from Max Planck Gymnasium (MPG) in Schorndorf, Germany, completing this year’s student exchange between the sister cities. After a warm welcome earlier this year in Germany, it was Tuscaloosa’s turn to share Southern hospitality and culture.

The delegation’s journey began in Atlanta and Birmingham, where students explored American landmarks and the Civil Rights Institute before reuniting with their Tuscaloosa City Schools (TCS) partners.

Beyond the classroom, the group explored Tuscaloosa’s rich history and culture—such as the historic Civil Rights Trail. At The University of Alabama, they toured the campus, stadium, and museums. A day trip to Huntsville’s U.S. Space and Rocket Center and a weekend on Alabama’s Gulf Coast added adventure and discovery to their stay.

The exchange culminated with a true Tuscaloosa tradition—a Crimson Tide football game attended by Germany’s Consul General Melanie Moltmann—and a farewell BBQ that gathered host families, educators, and city leaders to celebrate two weeks of friendship and learning.

As the students departed, they left with lifelong memories and stronger ties between Tuscaloosa and Schorndorf—proof of TSCI’s mission to build global understanding through citizen diplomacy.
