An Anniversary to Remember

This Valentine’s season, we look back to a heartwarming story from 1986 that beautifully captures the spirit of Sister Cities. The Uwe Banocks of Soltau, West Germany, and the George Hendersons of Coldwater, Michigan, celebrated their first and 34th wedding anniversaries on the very same date, an extraordinary connection made possible through a student exchange. Years earlier, the Hendersons hosted Karin Minor as their German exchange daughter, forming a bond so strong that they later traveled to Soltau to watch her marry Uwe Banock. In a deeply moving moment, Mr. Henderson signed the marriage license, traditionally a father’s role, after Karin’s father unexpectedly passed away. This story is a powerful reminder that Sister Cities partnerships are more than cultural exchanges; they create lifelong family ties that transcend borders and generations.
