Adana also has a large diaspora abroad, especially in Germany and other Western European countries, as a result of labour migration since the 1960s.
  • Neighboring Municipalities:
Adana borders six Turkish provinces: Mersin to the west, Niğde to the northwest, Kayseri to the north, Kahramanmaraş to the northeast, Osmaniye to the east and Hatay to the southeast. The Mediterranean Sea lies to the south. The nearest major cities are Mersin (about 70km) and Tarsus, which together with Adana form one of Türkiye’s largest urban and industrial corridors, with Gaziantep further east. Across the border and the sea, Adana’s nearest neighbouring countries are Syria and Cyprus, and it is within easy reach of the wider Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East.
  • Main Industries: The economy rests on three pillars:
    • Agriculturea and agri-food. The Çukurova plain is one of Türkiye’s most fertile agricltural regions, producing citrus, cotton, wheat, Mazine, peanuts, soybeans and vegetables. It supports a strong food-processing industry
    • Manufacturing. Adana is a long-established industrial centre in textiles and apparel, food and beverages, chemicals and plastics, machinery, and automotive (including bus manufacturing). Most of this is concentrated in the Adana Hacı Sabancı Organized Industrial Zone.
    • Energy, logistics and trade. Ceyhan, in Adana province, is the Mediterranean terminal of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyham crude-oil pipeline and a regional energy hub. The Yumurtalık Free Zone, the nearby port of Mersin and the city’s road and rail links make Adana a gateway between Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia.
  • Services, healthcare, higher education and gastronomy tourism, including the world-famous Adana kebab, are growing sectors.

Government & Private Sector Interest in Pairing

Local Government:
Adana Metropolitan Municipality is strongly committed to international coopereation and sees a partnership with a U.S. city as a strategic priority. Turkish law gives municipalities a clear mandate for such partnerships: under Article 74 of the Municipal Law No. 5393, which also applies to metropolitan municipalities, a municipality may establish sister-city relations by decision of its Municipal Council, with the approval of the Ministry of Interior. The Municipality is ready to start this process and to name a dedicated contact point in its foreign relations office for the partnership.
The partnership would build on long-standing ties between Adana and the United States. Adana hosts one of the few U.S. consulates in Türkiye, and Americans have been part of local life since the 1950s through Incirlik Air Base. Support also reachews well beyond the Municipality. Local stakeholders such as the Governorship, the district municipalities, Çukurova University, Adana Alparslan Türkeş Science and Technology University, and the Adana Chamber of Commerce and Chamber of Industry share an interest in exchanges in agriculture and food, education, public health, culture, youth and economic development. The Municipality is prepared to commit staff time, host delegations, and co-organise exchanges and joint projects to keep the partnership active over the long term.

Private Sector & Organizations:
Adana has an active civil society and business community that we expect to be closely involved in the partnership.
Business and trade. The Adana Chamber of Commerce, the Adana Chamber of Industry, the Adana Commodity Exchange and local business associations are interested in trade links with the U.S., especially in agri-food, textiles, logistics and energy.
Agriculture and food. Producer cooperatives, agri-food companies and NGOs working on climate and food security see opportunities for exchanges with U.S. partners on sustainable agriculture, water management and agri-tech.
Education and youth. University alumni networks, Fulbright and exchange-programme alumni, student clubs and youth NGOs are interested in student, teacher and researcher exchanges.
Culture, sport and gastronomy. Cultural associations, the organisers of the long-running Golden Boll (Altın Koza) Film Festival, sports clubs and Adana’s renowned gastronomy sector can bring people-to-people exchanges, festivals and culinary events.
Service clubs. Rotary and Lions clubs in Adana have international networks that can support volunteer and charitable joint projects.

The Municipality will bring these groups together in a local sister-city committee to plan activities and make sure the partnership is owned by the community and not only by the Municipality.

Why is your city interested in a Sister City Pairing?

Adana’s interest in a U.S. partner comes from a mix of long-standing ties and shared challenges.
Existing ties with the U.S. Americans have been part of Adana’s daily life for more than seventy years through Incirlik Air Base, and the city hosts a U.S. Consulate. A formal city partnership would turn these ties into lasting peope-to-people, educational and economic connections open to all residents.
There are strong similarities with both candidate regions.

What does your city have to offer a potential Sister City?
  • Agricultural and scientific know-how. Adana is at the heart of the Çukurova plain, one of the most productive farming regions in the Eastern Mediterranean. The city is home to Çukurova University’s Faculty of Agriculture and several national agricultural research institutes. We offer partnerships in citrus and field crops, irrigation and water management, biological pest control, food processing and climate-resilient farming.
  • Higher education and research. Our two public universities are open to student and faculty exchanges, joint research, summer schools and dual programmes. Çukurova University brings strengths in agriculture, medicine and engineering, and Adana Alparslan Türkeş Science and Technology University in engineering, technology and aviation.
  • A gateway for business. Adana offers access to Türkiye’s large domestic market and to the Middle East, Europe and Central Asia, through: the Adana Hacı Sabancı Organized Industrial Zone; the Yumurtalık Free Zone; the Ceyhan energy hub; nearby Mersin Port.
We can connect a partner city’s companies with local chambers, exporters and investors in agri-food, textiles, logistics and energy.
History, culture and nature. Adana’s heritage goes back thousands of years: the Roman-era Stone Bridge (Taşköprü), one of the oldest bridges in the world still in use; the ancient city of Anazarbus; the Yılankale, Kozan and other castles; the Sabancı Central Mosque.
The province stretches from the Mediterranean beaches of Karataş and Yumurtalık to the Taurus Mountains and Aladağlar, offering eco-tourism, highland culture and outdoor recreation.
Festivals, gastonomy and sport. Visitors and exchange groups can take part in the International Orange Blossom Carnival, which celebrates the region’s citrus heritage; the Golden Boll Film Festival; Adana’s famous cuisine, from the protected Adana kebab to Şalgam and local street food; a passionate football culture centred on the New Adana Stadium.
A welcoming, diverse community with municipal commitment. Adana is a multicultural city with more than severty years of daily contact with Americans. Adana Metropolitan Municipality, twice recognised by the Council of Europe for good governance, will host delegations, share its experience in municipal services, disaster preparedness and urban transformation, and co-organise youth, cultural and technical exchanges.

U.S. Regional Interests

Top Three U.S. States: Florida
California
Texas

  • Gainesville, FL. Like Gainesville, Adana is a universisty city built around agriculture. Çukurova University’s agricultural research and the University of Florida’s world-class agricultural and life sciences institute work on the same crops, including citrus, cotton, peanuts and vegetables, in a similarly warm, humid climate.
  • Southern California. Adana shares Southern California’s Mediterranean climate. Both are major agricultural and citrus regions, and both face the same pressures: drought, water scarcity, extreme heat and the need to feed growing, diverse urban populations. Both are also logistics gateways and have a strong film and culture tradition, from Hollywood to Adana’s Golden Boll Film Festival.
Shared challenges that need shared solutions. Climate adaptation, sustainable agriculture and food security, water management, urban heat, and inclusion of diverse communities are priorities for Adana. We want to learn from U.S. cities that are leaders in these fields and share our own experience in return.
Opportunities for young people and the economy. The Municipality wants to open exchange opportunities for students, researchers, young professionals and entrepreneurs, and new trade links for Adana’s agri-food, textile and logistics businesses.
