Why is your city interested in a Sister City Pairing?

Having lived in Germany in the 80s, Poland in the 90s & working with the Sister Cities Program in Baltimore in between, these & other life experiences led to a greater understanding of the value having cultural exchanges & education.

The extent of government interest in and support for city pairing

Government interest is currently at approximately 50%, with expectations to grow through increased awareness, education, and successful examples of partnerships.

The extent of private groups / organizations interest

There is high interest (around 90%) from private groups, including churches and local businesses, particularly in cultural, educational, and community-based exchanges.

What does your city have to offer a potential Sister City?

    • Strong community engagement and willingness to participate in international programs

Other areas the city is willing to pursue

Any specific cities previously researched? / Why do these particular cities stand out?

1.) Miyazaki, Japan – we share strong agricultural & rural identities, especially in the areas of beef, sweet potatoes & greenhouse farming. Both our communities are known for nature tourism & have strong traditions in cultural heritage & story telling opening school partnerships in folklore & history along with language learning. Food exchanges could lead to interesting culinary festivals with Texas BB & Japanese Wagyu beef. FYI: Virginia Beach is listed as Miyazaki’s Sister Cities, however after contacting authorities in Virginia Beach, apparently they no longer have the program.

2.) Tyczyn, Poland – while it appears many communities have Sister Cities in Poland, very few rural Texas counties do. Since they are on the “Cities Seeking Cities” list, we would be a great match as an American Frontier town to an authentic medieval European historic town. Agriculture & rural economic development would produce some great collaborations (such as a seed exchange), and we would be a perfect match to work with their internationally recognized cheerleading team to create a cheerleading camp featuring them.

3.) Plužine, Montenego – would be a town whose landscape and lifestyle closely resembles East Texas and would be a natural twin to Rains County. Yet, the differences that we are in a wooded countryside and they are located in steep mountains would make an interesting contrast of having very similar lifestyles in very different surroundings. Also, while lakes are an important part of both communities, each lake has very different origins and uses. Piva Lake is a hydroelectric reservoir, Lake Fork is a fishing reservoir & Lake Tawakoni is a flood control & recreation reservoir. Likewise, Piva focuses on kayaking & rafting and while fishing exists, is not the primary draw, which is just the opposite with lakes Fork & Tawakoni who both rely on fishing, with recreational boating secondary

4.) Lapio, Italy – both our communities share similarities in being small towns with an agriculture heritage, with the products being quite different, Rains with cattle & other small farms and Lapio with wine, olive oil, and farms for traditional Italian cuisine. This would open great opportunities for chef & restaurant collaborations. Both communities have tourism built around the local landscapes, which an exchange of experiences & methodology could produce both opportunities and insights. With both communities sharing a strong emphasis on local gatherings & celebrations, a truly deep cultural relationship could be developed evolving into long-term friendships & exchanges.
