Inaugural Gala Celebration Weekend

Sister Cities International (SCI) proudly celebrated a momentous occasion with the 2025 Inaugural Gala Weekend, a prestigious event that underscored the organization’s commitment to global diplomacy and cultural exchange. Every four years, SCI commemorates the inauguration of the President of the United States to honor the American tradition of peaceful transitions of power. Since its founding in 1956, SCI has maintained a special connection to the presidency, with multiple U.S. Presidents serving as the organization’s Honorary Chairman.

The weekend commenced with a welcome reception at Twin Oaks, the historic Taiwanese diplomacy house in Washington, D.C. This grand estate, with its rich history as a symbol of U.S.-Taiwan relations, provided a fitting backdrop for an evening of cultural appreciation and international camaraderie. SCI was honored to be hosted by Deputy Representative, Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States, Andrea Yang, who warmly welcomed guests and highlighted the deep-rooted friendship and shared democratic values between Taiwan and the United States. Attendees had the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions about the importance of citizen diplomacy in strengthening ties between nations, while also enjoying elements of Taiwanese culture, including traditional cuisine and artistic performances. This elegant gathering set the stage for a weekend of international engagement, fostering dialogue among diplomats, community leaders, and citizen diplomats dedicated to SCI’s mission.

The following evening, the Inaugural Gala Celebration was held—a distinguished event hosted at the German Ambassador’s Residence in Washington, D.C., where SCI was honored by the generous hospitality of German Ambassador Andreas Michaelis and his wife, Heike Michaelis. Their gracious support reinforced the strong bonds of international friendship and collaboration that define SCI’s mission. The evening brought together an esteemed group of attendees, including Ambassadors, diplomats, national leaders, municipal officials, and global community advocates. Throughout the gala, guests were reminded of the importance of diplomacy at every level—local, national, and international. The evening featured inspiring remarks emphasizing cultural exchange’s role in fostering global connections. As SCI continues to expand its programs and partnerships, the success of the 2025 Inaugural Gala Celebration serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of citizen diplomacy.

With a strong foundation laid by this landmark weekend, Sister Cities International looks forward to continuing its mission of building bridges between communities worldwide, ensuring that the spirit of peace and collaboration remains at the forefront of global engagement.
