Washington, D.C. (APRIL 14, 2026) – Sister Cities International (SCI) today announced that Broomfield, Colorado and Buffalo, New York have been selected from a strong pool of 34 applicants as the recipients of a grant supporting U.S.-Japan sister city programming. Funded by the United States-Japan Foundation, in collaboration with Sister Cities International, the US-Japan Global Impact Grant will support innovative local initiatives that strengthen international collaboration and address shared community challenges.
The selected projects exemplify the evolving role of sister city partnerships, moving beyond traditional cultural exchange to foster meaningful cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Buffalo and its sister city, Kanazawa, will leverage their statuses as Important Bird & Biodiversity Areas to promote bird conservation, environmental education, and citizen diplomacy. Broomfield and its sister city, Ueda, will send city employees on exchange trips to observe each city’s waste-reduction efforts, share strategies, and develop practical solutions to advance zero-waste goals and broader sustainability initiatives.

Through this grant, Buffalo and Broomfield will implement programs designed to deepen ties with their Japanese sister cities, while advancing practical solutions in their local communities. These initiatives reflect a broader commitment to people-to-people diplomacy and the US-Japan relationship, while demonstrating the continued relevance of sister city relationships in addressing global issues at the local level.

ワシントンD.C.（2026年4月14日）– 全米国際姉妹都市協会（SCI）は本日、日米間の姉妹都市プログラムを支援する助成金の授与対象として、34件の有力な応募の中からコロラド州ブルームフィールドおよびニューヨーク州バッファローを選出したことを発表しました。米日財団の資金提供により、全米国際姉妹都市協会との協力のもと実施される「日米グローバル・インパクト助成金」は、国際的な連携を強化し、地域共通の課題解決に取り組む革新的な地方自治体の取り組みを支援するものです。
選出されたプロジェクトは、従来の文化交流の枠を超え、相互に関心のある分野で有意義な協力を促進するという、姉妹都市パートナーシップの進化する役割を体現するものです。バッファローとその姉妹都市である金沢市は、両市が「重要野鳥生息地（IBA）」であることを活かし、野鳥保護、環境教育、そして市民外交を推進します。また、ブルームフィールドとその姉妹都市である上田市は、市職員の相互派遣を通じ、それぞれの廃棄物削減の取り組みを視察し、戦略を共有することで、ゼロ・ウェイスト目標の達成やより広範なサステナビリティの取り組みに向けた実践的な解決策を開発します。
