We’re excited to share a little about Denison, Texas—birthplace of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and a city with a legacy that reaches from North Texas to the world stage. Located at the very top of Texas along Lake Texoma and the Red River, Denison is home to nearly 27,000 residents and was founded in 1872 as a major hub for the Missouri–Kansas–Texas (MKT or “Katy”) Railroad.
Eisenhower, the 34th U.S. President and Supreme Commander of Allied Forces during World War II, was born here in 1890 while his father worked in the MKT rail yards. The family’s home on South Lamar Avenue—now the Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site—marks the beginning of an extraordinary journey from a Texas railroad town to global leadership.
Denison’s story also includes a remarkable international connection to Cognac, France, through renowned horticulturist T.V. Munson. His groundbreaking grape research helped save the French wine industry during the 19th-century phylloxera crisis, earning recognition from the French government and laying the foundation for Denison’s Sister Cities partnership with Cognac.
For more than 35 years, Denison and Cognac have celebrated a meaningful Sister Cities relationship rooted in shared wine and spirits heritage, cultural appreciation, and President Eisenhower’s vision of peace through people-to-people diplomacy. Annual teen exchanges continue to create life-changing, culturally immersive experiences for students in both communities.
Today, Denison proudly blends history with vibrancy. Visitors and residents enjoy outdoor recreation at Eisenhower State Park and an award-winning downtown—named 2025 Best Texas Downtown and recipient of the 2025 Great American Main Street Award—featuring the longest Main Street district in Texas, filled with local businesses, arts, dining, and welcoming public spaces.
