Why I Am Running for the Board of Directors
I am seeking a position on the SCI Board of Directors because I hold a deep and enduring belief in the mission of people-to-people diplomacy as a pathway to a more peaceful world. While it may sound idealistic, I am genuinely inspired by President Eisenhower’s vision—that lasting peace begins with relationships built on mutual understanding and respect.
At a time when the global landscape feels increasingly uncertain, I am motivated to contribute thoughtfully and intentionally to the Board’s leadership. I believe this is a moment that calls for clarity of purpose, steady guidance, and a reaffirmation of our shared values.
I would be honored to bring my experience to this work. My background as a research scientist has strengthened my analytical thinking, while my PhD in education and my current role as a community college instructor—teaching English as a Second Language to students from around the world—have deepened my commitment to cross-cultural understanding. Together, these experiences position me to contribute meaningfully to the Board and to the continued advancement of SCI’s mission.
Bio
I have been an active member of Cary Sister Cities for the past four years, beginning my service as a member of the Board of Directors. Shortly after joining, I was elected Vice President, a role in which I assumed many presidential responsibilities due to leadership transitions and unforeseen circumstances. This experience strengthened my organizational leadership and operational management skills.
During my tenure as Vice President, I led several key initiatives, including transitioning the organization’s website to an internally managed platform, securing Directors and Officers insurance, and moving our financial processing from a fee-based platform to a no-cost nonprofit system. These efforts improved both efficiency and financial stewardship.
Elected President soon thereafter, I am currently serving my third and final year in this role. As President, I have guided Cary Sister Cities toward a strategic focus on youth leadership development. We established partnerships with the Cary Chamber of Commerce to provide scholarships for the Sister Cities International Youth Leadership Summit, and our students have earned national recognition, including a Youth and Arts Showcase poetry award.
Additionally, I cultivated a partnership with TowneBank to expand scholarship opportunities and support local educator recognition programs. I also strengthened community engagement by collaborating with local cultural organizations and regularly partnering with sister city leadership in Raleigh and Durham on joint projects and events. I restructured the board into a committee-driven model to enhance effectiveness.
Under this leadership, membership has doubled. I currently serve as North Carolina Co-State Representative for Sister Cities International and partnership.
Skills
The major skills and assets I bring to the Board are threefold. I hold a deep commitment to the mission of Sister Cities International and believe strongly in people-to-people diplomacy as a path toward global understanding. As a former scientific research scientist, I offer a pragmatic, analytical perspective and strong problem-solving abilities. Additionally, I contribute four years of organizational leadership experience and one year serving as a state representative, supporting collaboration, governance, and strategic growth.
