2014 U.S.-China Sister Cities Award Winners Announced!

Sister Cities International is pleased to announce the winners of the 2014 U.S.-China Sister Cities Awards. The Awards recognize the accomplishments of outstanding U.S.-China sister city programs and their contribution in building strong people-to-people ties between the two countries.

Sister Cities International welcomes Latin American delegation

Sister Cities International welcomed a delegation of 70 representatives from municipalities across Latin America on November 7th. Members of the “International Technical Training Mission” represented 11 different countries including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela.

Portland-Khabarovsk Sister Cities Collaborate on Urban Planning and Management

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the Portland, Oregon and Khabarovsk, Russia sister city relationship. The two cities have many similarities – they’re both inland ports with a major rivers flowing through them, the Columbia and Willamette in Portland and the Amur in Khabarovsk.  Interestingly, they are both centers for jazz and blues.

Sister City Helps Revive Tradition

Sant’Elia Fiumerapido, Italy is a picturesque town in the Roman countryside with a long culinary history. It was known to provide much of the olive oil for the Roman Empire and olive harvesting is an integral part of the town’s identity and tradition. In recent years, with changes in the local economy, Sant’Elia’s famed olive trees are being threatened.

Announcing: The 2014 U.S.-China Sister Cities Conference

With over 200 sister city relationships, U.S.-China partnerships are the fastest growing in the sister cities network. Sister Cities International is committed to strengthening and growing sub-national exchanges and partnerships between the two countries. Sister Cities International is set to host the 2014 U.S. China Sister Cities Conference in March in Washington, D.C.

Spotlight: U.S.-Russia sister cities

In 1973, representatives from the U.S.S.R. Twin Towns Association and Sister Cities International met to discuss the guidelines for developing a sister city program between the two countries, marking a new era as communities moved past fears initiated by the Cold War. In 1977 there were 5 sister city partnerships, and by the time of the ground-breaking U.S.-U.S.S.R.

Phoenix Sister Cities Hosts Global Links Business Outlook Luncheon

Over 200 attendees gathered this June for the 14th Annual Global Links Business Outlook Luncheon, organized by Phoenix Sister Cities, in partnership with Arizona Forward. The luncheon this year focused on economic development and environmental sustainability.
